Essential tremor (ET), also known as idiopathic tremor or familial tremor, is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder often associated with a family history. Clinically, it is primarily characterized by involuntary tremors of the upper limbs, which may also involve the head, neck, face, jaw, and tongue, significantly impacting the quality of life.
Patients with poor responses to pharmacological treatment may undergo surgical interventions. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves the implantation of electrodes into specific nuclei, offering a minimally invasive, safe, and adjustable treatment option that is often considered the primary choice. Additionally, stereotactic thalamotomy targeting the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus is also an alternative.
