Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae (commonly referred to as gonococci), primarily presenting as purulent infections of the urogenital system. In rare instances, the eyes may become involved, leading to severe acute purulent conjunctivitis. Clinically, the disease is classified into neonatal and adult gonococcal conjunctivitis. Neonatal gonococcal conjunctivitis typically occurs due to infection from maternal vaginal secretions during childbirth or contact with other objects contaminated with gonococci. Adult gonococcal conjunctivitis is often caused by infection with urethral secretions from the same individual or another person. Its hallmark presentation includes hyperacute conjunctivitis accompanied by copious milky discharge. Other complications may include orbital cellulitis and neonatal gonococcal ophthalmia.
