Lesions of the optic radiation in the temporal and parietal lobes are characterized by the following features:
Homonymous hemianopia in both eyes with a high degree of congruency.
Sparing of the macula may occur due to the wide projection of nerve fiber bundles. This refers to the preservation of a 3°–10° central visual function zone within the scotoma.
No optic nerve atrophy and no Wernicke’s hemianopic pupillary reaction occur.
Associated cerebral symptoms, such as alexia or visual agnosia, may be present.
Treatment
Management focuses on addressing the underlying condition.
