Isolated lesions of the lateral geniculate body are extremely rare. The visual field defect typically manifests as homonymous hemianopia on the side opposite to the lesion in both eyes, with relatively symmetric visual field defects in both eyes. Since the pupillary nerve fibers that accompany the optic nerve exit the optic tract before entering the lateral geniculate body, Wernicke’s hemianopic pupillary reaction is absent. In the late stages, lesions of the lateral geniculate body may also lead to descending optic nerve atrophy.
