Clinical Manifestations
Symptoms
Patients may experience flashes of light and spiderweb-like floaters in their field of vision.
Ocular Examination
Ophthalmoscopy may reveal a dense, circular opacity, which arises from the detachment of the vitreous from its attachment to the optic disc. Slit-lamp examination may show a large, transparent cavity in the posterior vitreous, with marked movement of the vitreous when the eye rotates. The presence of pigment granules within the vitreous during slit-lamp examination may suggest the possibility of retinal tears or retinal detachment.
Complications
Rupture of the retinal vessels may result in vitreous hemorrhage.
The formation of horseshoe-shaped retinal tears may lead to retinal detachment.
Incomplete posterior vitreous detachment may contribute to the development of idiopathic macular holes.
Defects in the internal limiting membrane of the retina may stimulate the formation of an epiretinal membrane over the macula.
Treatment
No specific treatment is required. However, careful examination of the fundus is necessary to detect retinal tears or retinal detachment at an early stage for timely intervention.
